Stretching across the Caribbean Sea, the Bahamas islands invite you to savor a dreamy tropical climate, perfect for sun seekers and beach lovers. While the weather remains idyllic year-round, when should you plan your escape to this natural paradise?

1 - Bahamas climate

The climate in the Bahamas: sunshine in every season

The Bahamas climate enjoys almost constant sunny skies throughout the year. The summer months from April to October are warm and humid. It's an ideal time to discover the archipelago. With nearly 9 hours of daily sunshine, the quieter season lets you savor the scenery in peaceful tranquility. Even during the wet season that occurs at this time (between May and October), rainfall appears in a very occasional manner, mainly in the late afternoon. The rain vanishes as quickly as it arrives: that's the captivating nature of the tropical maritime climate! From November to March, the Bahamas experience a mild climate. The winter months attract travelers from all backgrounds. The days are shorter (7 hours), but wonderfully sunny. In summer, temperatures can climb up to 34°C, without falling below 23°C. In winter, highs can sometimes reach 28°C, with lows at 20°C. Both seasons are perfect for exploring the different islands of the Bahamas: Conception Island, San Salvador, Crooked Island, Acklins Island, and more.

During this season, visibility becomes ideal for diving adventures. The island itself crowns a submarine mountain rising 4,500 meters from the ocean floor, offering dramatic drop-offs where groupers glide past, hammerhead sharks patrol, rays drift by, and canyons bloom with gorgonians and sponges in a mesmerizing underwater ballet.

San Salvador, the gateway to the Americas

It was in San Salvador that Christopher Columbus dropped anchor in 1492 after 9 weeks of sailing in search of the New World. The island owes its names of Columbus Island and San Salvador, which means 'Saint Savior', to him.

3 - In summer

Traveling in summer to discover Bahamian nature

If you're wondering when to visit the Bahamas to savor a vacation in tropical warmth, consider a stay between June and October. This period marks the rainy season, but unlike some Caribbean destinations, rainfall rarely exceeds 10 mm monthly. The average temperature of 29°C and the gentle trade wind breeze create a warm and welcoming atmosphere for your getaway. Each day invites you to explore a different white sandy beach, as well as venture into the landscapes of San Salvador Island. Between saltwater lagoons and rolling hills, the atoll reveals its central lake and reserve, sheltering numerous bird species to admire during a hike. Don't miss spending a day on the white sandy beach of Long Bay. Its calm waters witnessed Christopher Columbus's arrival, and a large white cross stands to commemorate this historic moment. When to visit the Bahamas to experience the wonders of the Caribbean? In summer for a laid-back escape in tropical warmth, or in winter when mild temperatures offer an exotic refuge from the gray: the Bahamas and Columbus Island will be your sunny haven for holidays all year round.

The rainy season, ideal for diving

When to visit the Bahamas to savor the beauty of dive sites? You can explore all year round. Planning your stay during the rainy season between June and November? Tropical showers often arrive as brief storms, so underwater visibility remains optimal during the rainy season. With an average water temperature of 29 °C, it would be a shame not to dive in and discover the wrecks scattered across San Salvador's seabeds.

Off the coast of Green Cay, the wreck of the Brig Enterprise shelters a population of colorful fish, just like the Columbian wreck near North Point. Set off on a cruise to explore these spots and allow yourself a detour through the Movie Caves at Fernandez Bay and the double cave of Sandy Point, filled with coral, magnificent sponges, and even sharks. Finally, the most experienced divers can indulge in breathtaking descents along the underwater walls of this submerged mountain. You will glide among spectacular arches and crevices and can follow a path through the rock at 40 meters for a journey of 30 meters towards a chimney that opens onto the vastness of the ocean.
